據說樹齡最高可達六千年，其深紅色的樹脂被命名為龍血竭，不但可用於醫藥、染料，也被用於巫術、煉金術與民間魔法。最新的調查報告顯示，氣候緩化令季節性雲量减少，造成索科特拉島水分缺乏，加上外來物種入侵，索科特拉島上幾乎已經沒有了自然生長的龍血樹幼苗。專家預期，或許在100年內，索科特拉島多數龍血樹都會死亡，這一植物將面臨滅絕困境。
