Despite undergoing gruelling chemotherapy the brave 13-year-old had his  left leg amputated below the knee in March last year.

He was diagnosed with the rare and aggressive  cancer called Ewings Sarcoma, which affects fewer than 30 children a year, in  October 2010.

Since then Kieran has been determined to  remain active but his current replacement limb is heavy and slows him down, so  his parents Nicola and Alistair decided to try to raise the cash to buy him a  lighter model from the US.tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb( x- o+ s6 a1 h  M/ Y  e

But Euromillions winners Colin and Chris Weir  from Ayrshire - who scooped £161 million in a draw a year ago - heard about  Kieran's battle and stepped in with a five-figure donation to buy the new leg  outright.

Hotel provider JacTravel, which books more than 500,000 bookings a year in London, said numbers were 'very substantially down' compared with the same period last year.

Shops, museums and theatres have also seen their takings hit, with trade down by as much as 35 per cent.

'It is easy to blame the hotels for asking extortionate rates, but they deserve a little sympathy because, in most cases, they haven't catered for Olympic tourists before.公仔箱論壇0 ~& H* @/ Y0 q( ]: U% F

'You can definitely blame the Government and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), who have overhyped the event and have claimed it brings more benefits in terms of tourism than are realistic.

'The consequence of that is, because they're the Government and the IOC and they're the people who ought to know, hotels have been suckered into taking their word.'

The Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA), which represents 42 popular venues including the British Museum and London Zoo, said visitor numbers had fallen by between 30 and 35 per cent in the last two weeks.

The body's chief executive, Bernard Donoghue, said: 'For some of our members, it was the wettest spring and early summer that they could ever expect and those attractions that depend on the weather were severely affected.公仔箱論壇; Z( q7 U, [# G* K5 {* _: y- b4 q

'The good news for Brits is there has never has been a better time to visit an attraction in London,' he said.

Hotels began cutting their prices in June in an effort to fill empty rooms.

The website hotels.com said the average room price in London was slashed by a quarter after it was warned there was a 30 per cent drop in bookings during the Games.

Joel Brandon-Bravo, UK managing director of the travel website Travelzoo, said: 'As with the royal wedding, it does look like many hoteliers overestimated demand and are now left with empty rooms to fill.'

Business leaders in Weymouth and Portland, where the Olympic sailing venues are located, told a similar story today as they hailed this summer’s tourist season as the worst for half a century.

Visitors’ concerns over traffic congestion and inflated prices appear to have sent them elsewhere.

John Pearce, owner of award-winning Alf’s Traditional Fish and Chip Shop in Weymouth, said this summer’s trade had been down by 30 per cent on last summer.

Each contained lights that could be  programmed to display any colour - allowing organisers to create amazing video  images as if each were a pixel in a TV screen.

During the ceremony, the global television  audience watched as it displayed everything from a giant Union Flag to  undulating 'waves'.

The firm behind the images that were  displayed, Crystal CG, created a range of graphics  including a computer  generated image of the birth of the internet.5.39.217.76  }, X. X1 S& ~5 W( z
Crystal CG said this was the first time the  Pixel Tablets have been used on such a large scale.
'The audience literally became part of the  action,' said Will Case, creative director at Crystal.

Tait Technologies, which made the paddles,  said the system required 370km of cabling.

Because of the nature of its use over the  eight week period of the Olympics,  the system was installed as a permanent  installation, and is expected to be used in the closing ceremony as  well.3 y8 ]  q. y3 H( O
'The assembly of  dispersed LED pixels to  form very large video images has been with us  for some time,' said Frederic  Opsomer, CEO of Tait Technologies, who  drove the development of the new pixel  device.

'But never before has it been done on such a  scale, and with such organic animation.'
A team of 50 designers from Crystal London  delivered the content on the screen in 14 weeks.

The first tests were performed in the Olympic  Stadium on 10th July and a  final test run was done at the dress rehearsals last  week.公仔箱論壇  s$ |; N2 E1 E* R
Over  70 minutes of animations were all  custom-designed for the concave, bowl  shape of the 360˚ screen, and the company  claims that requests for  additional content were landing in the creative team’s  inboxes up to the last minute.

The audience at the Olympics closing ceremony  were treated to a taste of Britain's comedy heritage tonight when Monty Python  star Eric Idle appeared onstage.

The actor led the 80,000-strong crowd through  a singalong rendition of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, while a bizarre  troupe of dancers performed around him.

They included jigging Morris Dancers, a choir  of rugby players and skating nuns and when the song finished, a human cannonball  was launched across the stadium.

Percussion group Stomp emerged to swing from  the scaffolding, playing models of the capital's landmarks including Big Ben and  the London Eye as if they were instruments.

As  Michael Caine's classic 1969 film The Italian Job was shown on the  screens,  the yellow Robin Reliant of Only Fools and Horses fame made an  explosive entry,  with Batman and Robin staggering from the wreckage in  reference to one of the  classic British comedy's most famous episodes.

They will travel along Queen Victoria Street and Cannon Street, passing by St Paul’s Cathedral, continuing along Fleet Street, past Aldwych and into The Strand, before reaching Trafalgar Square.

A big screen at the base of Nelson’s Column along with live commentary will allow spectators to cheer on the athletes as the parade makes its way past Trafalgar Square.

After passing Trafalgar Square the athletes will go through Admiralty Arch into The Mall, travelling down to the Queen Victoria Memorial.
