Liverpool reclaimed third place after a 'perfect' hat-trick from Peter Crouch – one with his right, one with his left and one with his head. Daniel Agger and William Gallas were the other scorers on the day – though how many times have these been shown since? This fixture was also the first since Tom Hicks and George Gillett officially took charge.

One of the most memorable encounters witnessed at Anfield in modern times which climaxed with a late, late winner from reserve striker Neil Mellor. His 30-yard volley helped earn him a shock inclusion in .tv's 100 Players Who Shook The Kop. It was the Anfield Road End that was shaking in the first half when Xabi Alonso fired the Reds into the lead with an effort pilfered from the Valencia Book of Team Goals. An equally fine Patrick Vieira strike levelled things up just after the break, but it was the massively under-strength Reds who eventually prevailed.

　　在本赛季开始前，几乎没有多少人看好刚刚放走亨利的阿森纳能取得佳绩。温格本周接受采访时也承认，如果球队在赛季初就遭遇利物浦这样的强敌，也许球队并没有足够的自信去争取胜利。但随着阿森纳近期在各条战线上取得了近乎完美的战绩，温格表示球员们的心态已经出现了明显变化：“在这个赛季刚刚开始时，我们也许还没有强大到可以战胜任何对手的地步。但现在球员们已经拥有了充分的自信，每个人都对强强对话充满了渴望。我们将带着出色的状态去面对利物浦，并且向对方展示我们的强大实力。”

　　与渴望出现大比分的球员不同，温格倒是希望球队以一种更为成熟的方式战胜对手：“我们已经不再像上赛季那样充满焦虑，而是开始在场上变得更为成熟。在上赛季的比赛中，球队经常由于后卫在助攻后没有及时回防而面临失球压力。而在本赛季，球员们已经学会了如何集中注意力，这将使比赛按照我们期待的方式进行。”

	Steven Gerrard powered home a magnificent 20 yard free kick to give the Reds a narrow half time lead against the Gunners.
The skipper drilled in his third goal of the season on seven minutes after Xabi Alonso was brought down by Cesc Fabregas on the edge of the penalty area.    Emmanuel Adebayor and Tomas Rosicky have both had good chances for the visitors, but so far so good for the Reds.
