'We've been monitoring progress, challenging them (G4S), asking the questions, really going down and kicking the tyres and all those things, and they have been very robust about the fact that they would deliver on the contract,' he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
'It's only been in these last few weeks that these issues have emerged.'

COMPLAINTS, BLUNDERS AND CONTROVERSY AT G4S
G4S is the UK's biggest private security firm responsible for running security services, detention centres, prisons, and hundreds of court and police station holding cells - but it's never far from the headlines:

- In the early 1990s Group 4, as one arm of the company was then called, was viewed as a national joke after several prisoners escaped while being transported by the company.

'The decision was to suspend the business partnering programme, and the authority is minded to withdraw, subject to a paper that is going to come to a public meeting on September 6,' he said.

He pointed to a number of lone wolf attacks in the UK in recent years, including the incident when Roshonara Choudhry stabbed Labour's Stephen Timms twice in the stomach at his surgery in 2010 after watching extremist sermons online.
