Is he or isn't he? Around 11 pm on July 5, China's blogosphere began trading in rumors that Jiang Zemin, the former leader of the People's Republic, had died. By midnight local searches on this topic had become very popular. But within half an hour, the heavy hand of China's censors descended. Chinese language searches for words relating to death, even without being paired with Jiang's name, returned the Orwellian message: “According to relevant policies and laws, the search results are not shown below.”

So is Jiang dead? Gossip about the 84-year-old's ill health has circulated for some time, and the fact that he didn't show up for the mega-celebrations of the Chinese Communist Party's 90th anniversary on July 1st further fueled speculation. (In 2009, Jiang joined the festivities marking the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic.)

Perhaps most significantly in an autocratic nation, Jiang knew when to let go. At the end of his terms as President, Communist Party General Secretary and Central Military Commission chief, Jiang handed over the reins to Hu Jintao, avoiding the public tussles that had plagued previous leadership transitions in China. Even as his possible passing creates an Internet furor, Jiang will still be remembered as a man who knew how to make a graceful exit.

(While the accounts are likely to be false, some historical accounts say an ailing Mao Zedong was taken off life support on Sept. 9, 1976, because the ninth day of the ninth month would be an easy date for the masses to remember.)

The narrative about Communist Party leaders has always been a fraught business, with the passing of top leaders sometimes proving politically disruptive. In the end, as many as two million people defied the authorities by gathering in Tiananmen Square, where they criticized the Gang of Four, Mao and the excesses of his Cultural Revolution.

Si les spéculations sur l’état de santé de Jiang Zemin avaient été relancées après son absence remarquée aux célébrations du 90e anniversaire de la naissance de Mao Zedong, le 1 juillet dernier, l’annonce de sa mort sur la chaîne de télévision hongkongaise ATV, mercredi, a fait l’effet d’une bombe médiatique incontrôlable. Les utilisateurs du Web ont immédiatement diffusé l’information sur les réseaux sociaux, bien que de nombreux mots-clés – dont infarctus du myocarde et iang (rivière en chinois)  associés à l’ancien maire de Shanghai et à sa mort à l’âge de 84 ans aient été immédiatement censurés. Jeudi, le quotidien japonais «Sankei Shimbun» a encore rajouté un élément à la confusion, en confirmant le décès de l’ancien homme fort de la Chine.

Pékin redoute-t-il  alors qu’une partie de la dissidence fête la mort de ce liberticide ? Depuis l’obtention du prix Nobel de la Paix par Liu Xiaobo, et plus encore après la révolution du Jasmin en Tunisie, qui a ensuite gagné l'Egypte et la Libye, Pékin veille au grain, pour que les «porcs» ne se mettent pas à grogner. Selon le site Chinese Human Rights Defender, pas moins de 49 dissidents ont été arrêtés, après des appels anonymes à la révolution lancés sur Internet mi-février et des manifestations de soutien aux révolutionnaires arabes. Neuf personnes ont été formellement arrêtées, dont trois envoyés en camp de rééducation par le travail. Vingt-trois autres ont été libérés sous caution dans l’attente de leur procès. Et le site de détailler le sort de chacun, avocats, écrivains, blogueurs ou simples activistes pour une société plus juste et égalitaire en Chine. Le gouvernement de Hu Jintao mène ainsi une guerre sans précédent contre la cyber-dissidence, surveillant les réseaux sociaux comme le lait sur le feu. Il est toujours impossible pour le citoyen chinois de s'informer sur les révolutions menées dans les pays arabes ou sur la crise nucléaire de Fukushima, sans prendre le risque d'être traqué à son tour par les autorités.
