The incessant crying of a child for about 10 hours up to 1am Monday prompted a disturbed neighbour to take action, resulting in the rescue of a six-year-old girl locked up alone at her flat in Jalan Perak here. 6 g2 |6 }4 `/ Y! ?
The neighbour, who declined to be identified, said she heard the girl crying from about 3pm Sunday.

A police spokesman said a team of policemen and Social Welfare Department personnel rushed to the flat Monday morning and forced their way in to see a frightened girl with injuries on her hands, legs and body, apparently the result of physical abuse.: O' c3 M0 e3 M% {) W! e8 E
She had been left alone at the flat by her father, who was spotted by neighbours returning to the housing estate but fled when he noticed policemen at his flat.5 `" L. k1 n0 E. |
Police tried in vain to contact the family of the girl, who was taken to Penang Hospital for an examination of the injuries.1 }) W% T5 u' L0 A* W
North East District Police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng confirmed the rescue and said an investigation has been initiated.
