And part of that development is the construction of the Express Rail Link. We begin this week's show with Beijing's decision to suspend former Chongqing party chief Bo Xilai from the Politburo and to investigate his wife on murder charges. Mr Bo was once tipped as a future leader, and the government has clearly been nervous about how his removal will play with the public. Around 40,000 people die in Hong Kong every year. Many of their families are finding it harder to pay for funeral parlour services. The operation of the one government-owned parlour has been awarded to a listed company called the South China Memorial Park and Funeral Service Ltd on a five-year contract. The contract, awarded by tender, cost $279 million. That startled funeral operators. It’s close to fourteen times as much as the tender cost 10 years ago. The operators immediately increased the fees, and all the commercial funeral parlours have followed suit. The hike has affected many peripheral businesses.5.39.217.76/ X1 h+ b, s) ~2 m* Y. K& H6 [

Blind since childhood, Chen Guangcheng initially received a poor education. He’s now a self-taught lawyer. As a locally based activist and “barefoot lawyer” in Shandong he initially received praise from local authorities for demanding rights for the disabled. Then he crossed the line: drawing attention to the local party’s forcing of abortions and sterilisations on local women as part of the country’s one-child policy. After four years in jail in dubious charges, Mr Chen was released but kept under house arrest for 19 months. Chen's escape from house arrest and to the United States embassy in Beijing stunned millions, more outside of China than within the country, where authorities have kept him relatively unknown. Now it’s raising serious questions about Sino-American relations, and the relationship between power and rule of law in China. 2 i4 M( M, h* I( x# ~9 otvb now,tvbnow,bttvb * H- u& j1 B% c0 T2 [公仔箱論壇If Chen does go into exile he’ll be following in the footsteps of many others, including Chinese writer Yu Jie who was vice-president of the Independent Chinese PEN Centre, but now lives in Virginia in the United States. Yu Jie fled to the United States in January after months of abuse, house arrest and round-the-clock surveillance by China’s state security. He is a well known critic of the Chinese government’s human rights record. 8 A% ?2 m4 s/ X, w# R
