The memorial was created in 2007 by an association dedicated to the crash victim's families. It features a DC10 airplane, the model that went down, in black rock inside the compass pointed in the direction of its intended flight path.

September 19, 1989 the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 aircraft registered N54629 took off from N'Djamena International Airport at 13:13. 46 minutes later, at its cruising altitude of 10,700 metres (35,100 ft), a bomb explosion caused UTA Flight 772 to break up over the Sahara Desert near the towns of Bilma and Ténéré in Niger. All 155 passengers and 15 crew members died.

Nearby, a plane wing sits upright in the sand, with a plaque holding the names, ages and nationalities of the victims. ' I5 Z& ]+ ~6 L/ q0 K* z2 `It took two months to create the memorial, with stones transported more than 100 kilometres across the desert.
