The first mural in Sheffield was unveiled in December 1986. Since then over sixty murals depicting the area's rich history and beautiful natural scenery have been painted on walls scattered throughout the town and buildings along the roadside. The murals attract an estimated 220,000 people to the town annually.

There are artists of every discipline, including photography, fine art, glass, woodcraft, pottery, ceramics and specialised crafts.

A poem is selected which the artists use as their inspiration. 本來 Sheffield 是一個寂寂無名的農業小鎮，當地居民為了吸引遊客前來，開始於鎮上的建築物畫上壁畫，之後更吸引世界各地的畫家前來創作。現在 Sheffield 已成為塔斯曼尼亞著名的壁畫小鎮。
