It's strange the Pope would apologize for his native country Germany as he is a religious leader, not a political leader. In fact, the Pope during the WWII, Pius XII, was a controversial figure, some even called him the Nazis' Pope. However, Benedict XVI made no mention of him. It is true that Britain was last bastion of the Allied powers and she played an important role in the final victory over the Nazis. The Church, with its usual staunch anti-communism sentiment, would underplay the contribution of the Soviet Union in the war, millions(civilians and soldiers) perished in fighting the Germans when the Allies retreated to Britain. |
