Thousands of troops having to step in as Olympic guards after G4S failed to train enough staff have had all their leave cancelled - and they've been 'rewarded' with tickets to the dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony.

A police authority has suspended its part in a privatisation scheme following the failure of plans by security firm G4S to provide enough guards for the Olympics.

A meeting of Surrey Police Authority today decided to suspend its business partnering programme, a joint initiative with its West Midlands counterpart and the Home Office, a spokesman said.% }+ b! c! W5 J" W- Z" v

'The decision was to suspend the business partnering programme, and the authority is minded to withdraw, subject to a paper that is going to come to a public meeting on September 6,' he said.

Will Hartley, head of the IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre, said: 'The threat posed by so-called 'lone wolf' terrorists - who act independently rather than as part of a militant group - is of particular concern to the security services, in part because the threat is so hard to quantify.

'The potential harm such individuals can cause was amply demonstrated by the combined improvised explosive device (IED) and small-arms rampage perpetrated by Anders Breivik in Norway in July 2011, in which 69 people were killed.'

Mr Hartley went on: 'Although by definition the lone wolf threat is unpredictable, with individuals potentially motivated by any number of causes, in the UK the clearest threat is posed by aspiring jihadists who align themselves with the transnational militant Islamist movement.'

He pointed to a number of lone wolf attacks in the UK in recent years, including the incident when Roshonara Choudhry stabbed Labour's Stephen Timms twice in the stomach at his surgery in 2010 after watching extremist sermons online.

Police and intelligence officials are understood to have picked up an increase in chatter, but there is not thought to be any intelligence of a credible plot to attack the Games.
