Friday night featured the debut of the new CBS medical drama A Gifted Man, which seemed to hold its own with 9.3 million viewers – not bad for a new show on Friday night at 8 PM all things considered. Meanwhile, the return of Nikita to The CW (on its new night and time, I might add), fared fairly well with 1.9 million viewers.

The big winners for the night – no surprise, really – were CSI: NY and Blue Blood with 10.7 and 11.9 million viewers respectively. Sadly, the return of the cult and fan favorite genre FOX series Fringe didn’t perform as well as had been anticipated, garnering only 3.5 million viewers, which was down 21% from last year; yet on the other hand this premiere was 67% higher than the premiere of The Good Guys from last year. Supernatural, meanwhile, earned 2.0 million viewers, which can be seen as good for The CW; but they were down 25% in the much-coveted age demographic.

As has been the norm for many years now, Saturday is usually filled with repeats; but right now some of the networks are reairing season/series premieres. CBS rolled out Person of Interest with 4 million and Unforgettable with 5 million.   NBC reaired Harry’s Law with 4 million, Prime Suspect with 4.8 million and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit with 4.7 million. The penultimate episode of Doctor Who aired on BBC America, but, sadly, ratings for this cabler are extremely difficult to track down.

Then over on Sunday night, the evening was, of course, filled with Sunday night football on NBC which averaged 17.7 million viewers. CBS also got a heavy share of viewers with 60 Minutes, which brought in about 12.6 million for the night.

Meanwhile on the dramatic front, ABC unveiled the final season premiere of Desperate Housewives, earning 9.8 million viewers, which was down 25% from its premiere from last year while the debut of the new series Pan Am got 10.9 million viewers, being the first series to build on the numbers from its lead-in since 2006. Whereas, The Good Wife returned for its new season on CBS, garnering 10.5 million viewers with CSI: Miami averaging out to 10 million viewers for the night.
Not to be outdone was animation Sunday on FOX with The Simpsons kicking off its unprecedented 23rd season with 7.9 million viewers; The Cleveland Show holding its own with 6 million viewers; Family Guy bouncing up to 7.6 million viewers and American Dad leveling off the night with 5.7 million viewers.
The key items to watch out for next weekend will be if The Gifted Man can hold onto its numbers and if the tag team of Nikita and Supernatural can maintain their numbers to keep The CW satisfied. Elsewhere, it will be interesting to see if Desperate Housewives can catch up to timeslot competitor The Good Wife and if the newcomer Pan Am can keep CSI: Miami at bay? What do you think will happen next weekend? Please share your thoughts.
