The president, Tony Tan, faces a potential salary cut of 51%, though many observers may consider him well paid, at 1.5m dollars for a ceremonial post that requires him to perform only minor duties.

Despite the pay cut, Lee's salary will still be three times that of the Hong Kong chief executive, Donald Tsang, the world's next highest-paid political leader, who earns about £353,000 a year.# x$ Y9 W2 ?, O) r; ^" c
By comparison, Barack Obama, as president of a country of 312 million people that also has the world's most powerful military and the top economy, earns £256,000.
