根據烏克蘭情報部門SBU上載到YouTube的通話錄音（附英文字幕），其中一通據稱是一名叛軍將領跟一名俄方軍事情報官員的對話。錄音中，該名「情報官員」稱「我們剛擊落了一架飛機」；另一通電話錄音則似乎是兩名叛軍的對話，其中一人似乎在視察後得悉客機墜毀了。通話內容顯示兩人大為震驚。在第3通通話中，一名據稱是叛軍指揮官Nikolay Kozitsin的人，跟一名叛軍說，也許墜毀的馬航客機上有間諜，否則沒理由在這一區出現。
