Britain was braced for yet more rain as forecasters revealed torrential downpours will do an about-turn and strike across southern England tonight.

The Met Office has issued a 'yellow warning' for large swathes of the South, South East and South West as it emerged the jet stream is sweeping the bad weather back down the country and is likely to cause more flooding.

A force spokesman stressed that the headquarters building, which is in Newby Wiske, is not an operational police station and the disruption will not affect day-to-day policing of the county. He also said the building itself was not flooded.
