You seems so upset with US military presence in Australia. When I read the part "I would not be an American now for anything, not even for a grey-shingled mansion in the Hamptons and a guaranteed week in bed with Diane Keaton.", I can't help looking at the date of the article. Diane Keaton must be over 60 now, I love her as an actor, but going to that extreme, ... not sure it's a reward or punishment.....(just kidding)!

Few people pay heed to the warning from Eisenhower about the "military industrial complex" even up to now, especially in US. Though the voice is weak, there are still reflection on this problem.
