I don't think his action  has any abhorrent motive behind. The fact that the Auschwitz Concentration Camp being established as a memorial to the Holocaust  already embodies a solemn theme that this kind of history must not be allowed to repeat. His jubilant celebration as a survivor surely should have our understanding as we must look forward to better days instead of dwelling too deeply in the sorry past. When we watched the documentary Night and Fog (Nuit et brouillard), we have a deep awakening of the horrid deed committed by the Nazi. Despite that, episodes of genocide still happened  in recent decades. This site is a very sensitive (because of its painful past) and any seemingly innocent or well-intentioned act would draw criticism. The late John Paul II wanted to put up a Cross on the site, he was severely criticized for the incompatibility of Christianity and Judaism, though I think this argument is trivial.
