Although France's motto is "Freedom, Equality, Brotherhood", its track record in recent history suggests otherwise. From Vichy France, Vietnam and Algeria, it shows nothing that the French administration was embodiment of the motto. Like Algeria, it took years of bloody war (Algerian War of Independence)  before Charles de Gaulle allowed its independence in 1962.
