The Lakers coach might have thought he needed a bit of extra luckbecause the Lakers were without Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, who sat outbecause of injuries.
As it turned out, all the Lakers needed were Lamar Odom and DJ Mbegna.
Odom scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Mbenga hadeight points and seven blocked shots to pace the Lakers to a 106-89preseason victory against Denver at the Honda Center.
Odom and Mbenga started in place of the two regular post players andcarried the Lakers through the first three quarters. Like the otherstarters, neither played in the final quarter.
Gasol continues to be bothered by a right hamstring strain, causinghim to miss his fifth preseason game. His is doubtful for theregular-season opener. Bynum sat out after straining his right rotatorcuff in the Lakers’ previous game in Ontario and is listed day-to-day.
Kobe Bryant led the team with 23 points in 30 minutes of play, and Josh Powell came off the bench and scored 15 points.
The Lakers finish up their preseason tour with a stop Friday in SanDiego, where they will play the Nuggets at the San Diego Sports Arena.
