章四維（郭晉安飾）開辦學堂作育英才，門生周菊（黃翠如飾）與四維亦師亦友，天資聰穎但讀書一知半解，經常誤用成語；四維為人正義，眼見世道荒唐，深感教育難以改變人心，適逢巧遇來歷不明但筆鋒銳利、好勝好辯的陳真真（田蕊妮飾），二人遂成為無人不曉的雌雄狀師，惡名昭彰的潘鏡全（張國強飾）和兒子潘爾名（林曉峰飾）視他們為死敵，四維的轉變令好友夏侯武（麥長青飾）痛心失望，因夏侯武的父親當年被名狀師陳夢吉（李成昌飾）誣陷而處死，對狀師深惡痛絕，夏侯武雖明白四維的用意，卻對真真的來歷起了疑心，追尋之下，掀起一宗埋藏廿年的冤案再度重審，冷血狀師殺手又突然出沒，於是謠言四起，全城惶惶不可終日……
