該劇講述了中國最後壹位皇帝愛新覺羅·溥儀傳奇而又跌宕起伏的壹生，從皇帝到元首，從戰犯到新公民，曆經紫禁城最後的榮耀，天津寓公北上成“滿洲國皇帝”，日本戰敗被俘至蘇聯壹禁就是五年，作爲戰犯引渡回國後獲得特赦。他人生中最光明和有希望的日子來了，以壹名普通公民的身份參加工作和選舉，最終沐浴在新時代的曙光中，帶著對新生活的不舍病逝。清王朝興繁衰弱近三百年，它是封建王朝時代的最後壹個朝代；五百多位顯赫帝王中，他是最後壹個皇帝，夾雜在風起雲湧的政治鬥爭中無能爲力，掙紮在複辟大清卻反爲傀儡的無奈中。他的命運與封建王朝轉向新中國的掘起交織糾結，更是中國兩代朝政更替的縮影。
