在印第安语中，“密西”意为“大”，“西比”意为“河”，“密西西比”即“大河”或“河流之父”的意思。
流域各州包括明尼苏达州、威斯康星州、艾奥瓦州、伊利诺伊州、密苏里州、肯塔基州、田纳西州、阿肯色州、密西西比州、路易斯安那州等10个。加上分支占了美国29个州，其中包括印第安纳州、俄亥俄州、蒙大拿州等。而其中的威斯康星河最后流经的湖一半在威斯康辛，一半在密歇根。

The Mississippi River is the chief river of the largest drainage system in North America. Flowing entirely in the United States (though its drainage basin reaches into Canada), it rises in northern Minnesota and meanders slowly southwards for 2,530 miles (4,070 km) to the Mississippi River Delta at the Gulf of Mexico. With its many tributaries, the Mississippi's watershed drains all or parts of 31 US states and 2 Canadian provinces between the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains. The Mississippi ranks as the fourth longest and tenth largest river in the world. It worth to spend a trip here.
