Earlier today pictures emerged of the dramatic moment that a motorist saved the life of another man by pulling him through the window of his car.
The unnamed pensioner became stranded after driving into deep flood water and was spotted by David Dunn from Keynsham, Somerset, earlier today.
Mr Dunn and his son drove their Land Rover into the flood after seeing him floating down the swollen river and pulled him through the window onto the bonnet of his vehicle. The man was said to be shaken but otherwise unhurt.
A hospital in North Yorkshire was at risk of being flooded today and patients were being turned away after an underground beck turned into a raging torrent. Police, coastguard and mountain rescue teams were alerted after a reported sighting of someone falling into the River Annan, in the Everholm area of Annan, in Dumfries and Galloway, at about 6.30pm yesterday.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said boat searches of the river were carried out while a helicopter flew over the area. A shoreline search from Everholm to the river mouth at Solway was also undertaken by police and Moffat Mountain Rescue Team. The teams were stood down for the night as nothing was found.

Three people have died in the worst flooding in some areas for 70 years with concerns growing for a missing man as the Environment Agency says that current conditions in the UK pose a 'serious threat to life'.

The homeless woman who died in Exeter was killed at 11.50pm on Saturday night when a large spruce tree collapsed on Western Way, Exeter, seriously injuring two other people.
Inspector Andrea Webber said she had been living in the tent sheltered against  a wall at the roadside when the tree fell on it.

Both the RAC and AA breakdown services reported surges in flood-related call-outs as roads and highways across the country were closed due to perilous standing water. The AA answered about 12,000 breakdowns yesterday, including almost 700 cases of people stuck in flood water or mud, a spokesman said.
But that has not deterred many motorists from taking their chances, incurring the wrath of one emergency worker who hit out at risk-takers. Nathan Hudson, general manager of West Midlands Ambulance Service, appealed for people to stop endangering their and rescue workers' lives.
'People who attempt to pass through flooded roads are not only putting their own lives at risk, but also the lives of the emergency services staff who have to rescue them. A little bit of common sense from the public will ensure that no one's life is put in any unnecessary danger.'
Emergency services urged motorists to take extra precautions when tackling roads today, following the anticipated heavy rainfall. Floods Minister Richard Benyon said he was frustrated about flood defence failures in the village of Kempsey, Worcestershire.
He told ITV Daybreak: 'It is slightly frustrating. I feel really sorry for the people of Kempsey, who were flooded because the pumps didn't turn on. They must feel really let down this morning and we want to get to the bottom of what happened there.

Mr Benyon hit out at the insurance industry for what he said was a 'rather demeaning' attempt to highlight negotiations over future cover on the back of the latest floods. 'We want a solution even more now after the difficult events of the weekend,' he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme. 'We have had two years to sort this out. During that time the insurance industry has put a massive amount of work and money into coming up with an insurance-led solution.

The minister insisted the Government remained 'really determined' to reach a deal and that the issue was an 'absolute priority' for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). And he criticised the ABI for airing its concerns at the height of the crisis.
'I think it is actually rather demeaning at this particular moment in time to be talking about this,' he said - saying he could not negotiate on air. It is rather a shame that it has been raised at this particular moment when there are a lot of distressed people with flooded homes.'

Asked if he found it cynical, he told the programme: 'We are just concentrating flat out with dealing with this situation. What we are talking about on insurance is an absolute priority for our department but at the moment we are dealing with flooded properties and I really want to concentrate on that.'
Victims of the floods 'need to know that we want to find a solution which is an agreement between Government and the insurance industry that provides insurance that is universally available, is affordable.
'That is our absolute priority. The new Secretary of State, Owen Paterson, it was the first meeting he had on coming into post. It is an absolute priority for me as well. To say there is deadlock is not right.'
He added: 'We don't want to see a huge burden going on insurance premiums across the country. We want to make sure there is not some bottomless pit of Government funding that highly-profitable financial organisations can tap into.tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb$ F/ o9 I! Y7 K; v% U; x. U

The clean-up operation has already begun in earnest across Cornwall, one of the worst-hit areas. Residents in Helston reported floodwater of up to 2ft surging through the town as torrential rain battered the south west of England during an unrelenting weekend of poor weather.
At one point, the Environment Agency placed a severe weather warning on the area around Helston's River Cober - one of four such alerts issued nationally over the weekend - indicating a real risk to life.
But the alert has since been downgraded, as a band of showers moves towards the north of the country. Residents across Cornwall have already begun the task of drying out and dehumidifying as insurers and surveyors begin assessing the damage to homes and property.

Helston town mayor Jonathan Radford-Gaby said four families were evacuated from their homes near the Cober on Saturday evening as a precautionary measure. David Owens, duty director for Cornwall Council, earlier told the BBC that the rest centres were all stood down after residents had left.
He said: 'We did have a couple of residents in Mevagissey where we had some 25 properties flooded. We didn't have any attendance in Millbrook where we had approximately 40 properties flooded. Those situations are really improving.'
Mr Owens said there had been more than 400 staff from the council, police, fire services and the Environment Agency working during the night, and numbers were reduced as weather began to clear from the west.
