　　原作是宮尾登美子的《天璋院篤姬》。主人公是江戶幕府第十三代將軍德川家定的正室天璋院（篤姬）。這是2006年的『功名十字路』相隔兩年後，歷史上第七部以女性為主角的大河劇。tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb( {5 d& A# \, O+ d* ^  }
　　這是2004年播放的『新選組』以來第二部講述幕末時代的作品，也是2005年的『義經』之後第二部宮尾登美子的原作。

　　天璋院（てんしょういん·島津篤子→近衛敬子、天保6年12月19日（1836年2月5日）——明治16年（1883年）11月20日）篤姬（あつひめ）是江戶時代後期到明治時代的女性，是江戶幕府13代將軍德川家定的御台所（正室、繼室）。實父是薩摩國（鹿兒島縣）藩主島津家的一門·今和泉領主島津忠剛。幼名是一（かつ）。作了島津齋彬的養女時改名為篤子（あつこ），作了近衛忠熙的養女時改名為敬子（すみこ）。

　　安政3年（1856年），篤姬成為了右大臣近衛忠熙的養女，這一年的11月作為家定的正室進入了大奧。但是，安政5年（1858年）7月齋彬突然死亡，8月家定也離開了人世，14代將軍由德川家茂就任，篤子沒有能完成使命。家定死後篤子剃髮，以後自稱為「天璋院」。5.39.217.768 g) J$ k) p' n/ |& m+ \0 }! ^
　　幕府為了促進公武合體政策，文久2年（1862年）朝廷決定將皇女和宮作為家茂的正室送入大奧。薩摩藩向天璋院提出住回薩摩國，但天璋院拒絕歸國。另外，當初進門的和宮與天璋院是一種「嫁姑」的關係，而且由於皇室出身和武家出身的差異使得兩人有著種種不和，但據說之後和解了。1 K4 y0 h# b+ Z$ z( |$ n5 x7 R5 t
　　根據勝海舟等人的描述，天璋院對自己一手扶植並確立的將軍候補德川慶喜的關係十分險惡。慶應2年（1866年） 針對慶喜的大奧改革，天璋院與在德川家茂死去之後號稱「靜寬院宮」的和宮一起進行了抵制。另一方面，慶應3年（1867年）由於慶喜對朝廷進行「大政奉還」的直接後果也就是從江戶幕府解散到江戶城無血開成的整個過程中，為了營救德川家和慶喜全力對自己的娘家島津家做工作，同時和宮全力做了朝廷的工作。
