（洛杉矶13日綜合電）去年6月退役的美國奮進号（Endeavour）太空梭，上月搭乘波音747客機，由過去服役的佛州卡納維爾角空軍基地飛抵加州，周五離開暫時停靠的洛杉矶國際機場，朝向加州的科學中心作永久展覽。
由于太空梭機身龐大，高度超過5層樓，重量逾76.5公噸，沿途的路燈、招牌、行道樹等障礙都必須移除，比上太空還麻煩，可算是太空飛行裏程數超過2億公裏的奮進号最困難的任務。. ~1 n/ {$ u: l

At its prime the space shuttle Endeavour was the fastest craft ever operated by man, hitting speeds of up 18,00 mph or Mach 25 on re-entry to the Earth's atmosphere - but today the spacecraft's last trip is going a lot more slowly.

Setting off last night from Los Angeles International Aiport to its new home at the California Science Center, Endeavour will spend two days traveling the 12 mile distance at a top speed of 2 mph.

And while the patient trawl through LA's streets may not be the riskiest of final missions for the shuttle, it is one of the most complicated Endeavour has undertaken.

Hundreds of people waiting in the predawn darkness snapped photos and gaped as it inched by with its tail towering over streetlights and its wings spanning the roadway.

'I'm speechless. It's like a once-in-a-lifetime chance,' one man told KABC-TV.

The youngest shuttle, Endeavour replacedChallenger, which blew up during liftoff in 1986. NASA lost another shuttle, Columbia, in 2003 when it disintegrated during re-entry. Fourteen astronauts were killed.

During 25 missions, Endeavour spent 299 days in space and orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times, racking up 123 million miles.$ l( Q$ K$ V' o6 l/ M7 y

In its maiden flight in 1992, a trio of spacewalking astronauts grabbed a stranded communications satellite in for repair.

It also flew the first repair mission to the Hubble Space Telescope to fix a faulty mirror. But most of its flights ferried cargo and equipment to the International Space Station, which is near completion.

Under White House orders to explore beyond low-Earth orbit, NASA is hitching rides on Russian rockets to the orbiting laboratory until private companies can provide regular service.

美國退役穿梭機「奮進號」日前進行最後旅程，由重型拖車運載，由洛杉磯國際機場駛入巿區，數以千計群眾夾道圍觀。途人難得近距離目睹穿梭機的風采，都顯得十分興奮，爭相拍照留念。

先後執行25次升空任務的「奮進號」體型龐大，有37米長、重78噸（17萬磅），在洛杉磯街道出現時，成為龐然大物。當局須將道路兩旁二百多支街燈和近四百棵樹移除，一些紅綠燈，交通標誌，電線桿及泊車咪標亦要暫時移走，以方便穿梭機在馬路上行走，開往博物館展覽。& n9 R8 N8 F: Q/ a( d1 Z

洛杉磯市政府為今次巡遊籌劃近一年，耗資超過一千萬美元（約7750萬港元）。
