This week, nominations opened for the Legislative Council Elections. There were also newspaper reports that the number of registered voters aged 60-65, considered more likely to vote for pro-Beijing parties, has increased by 50%. Meanwhile voter registration in the 30-40 age group has dropped by more than 10%, which is bad news for democrats. In the functional constituencies, loopholes mean that eligible corporate voters are registered at single addresses. It’s going to be an intensely fought election. But is it going to be an uphill struggle for the pro-democrats? Cantopop might not dominate the local music industry quite as much as it once did, but still the most popular music in Hong Kong consists of relatively easy-listening songs supported by high production values and glossy concerts. Some of Hong Kong’s young musicians prefer to emphasise the energy and sense of rebellion of rock music, and they have their own dedicated audience.
