RAFA BENITEZ did something totally out of character for a Liverpool manager when he criticised the people who run the club in the press.

The Liverpool way has always been to do things behind closed doors, to never show others that you are having problems.

All the managers I played under at Anfield did it that way and even when Graeme Souness was having big problems we might have known there were things going on but they were never made public.

I’d imagine the club’s American owners are upset with what has happened and they have every right to be but I really hope that Rafa keeps his job.

If you look at his record since he became Liverpool manager in the summer of 2004 you would have to be impressed.

How many other managers have won a European Cup and an FA Cup in the last three years?

Throw in a European Super Cup and another European Cup Final in Athens which Liverpool were unlucky to lose and Benitez is able to boast quite a record in the cup competitions.

The league title might have eluded him so far but that was always going to be the most difficult one to win because the competition is so strong.

Liverpool are playing very well at the moment as well. They are unbeaten in the league and on Saturday they made Newcastle look really ordinary because they performed so well.

People might look at Saturday’s game and think Newcastle were useless but that was only because Liverpool made them look so poor.

Their passing was really crisp and accurate from the very first whistle and I don’t think there are many teams around who would have been able to live with Liverpool in that form.

It could easily have been seven or eight and it was just lucky for Newcastle that Fernando Torres wasn’t at his best in front of goal because he could have scored a bag full.

So if you look at the way Liverpool are performing you would have to say the manager is doing a good job and I hope he is given the opportunity to continue it.

Reds can overpower Porto

I REALLY fancy Liverpool to get the win they need against Porto tomorrow night – even though I believe this is the hardest game they have left in the group.

Porto are a very good side and they will be looking to hit Liverpool on the break and they have a few players in attack who can cause problems for Rafa Benitez’s men.

But Liverpool are more than capable of overcoming them and if they do I fully expect them to go to Marseille in the last game and get the result they need to go through to the knockout stages.

The Anfield crowd will be at its very best and I don’t think Porto will be able to cope with the wall of noise that is going to hit them.

If you think back to the Juventus game in 2005 they just couldn’t cope with the atmosphere during the first 20 minutes and I’m expecting something similar tomorrow.

So, if Liverpool can grab an early goal it could set the tone for the night and a win would put them on course to qualify.

Sharing out goals will have thrilled the boss

IT was good to see other players chipping in with the goals against Newcastle on a day when Fernando Torres was having no luck in front of goal.

The fact that Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel all got their names on the scoresheet will be great news for Rafa Benitez because as a manager you always like to see goals being shared out throughout the team.

And each of the goals was great in its own way. Gerrard’s free kick was totally unstoppable, Babel’s was a lovely finish at the end of a great passing move and even Kuyt’s was a lovely poacher’s effort, the kind that strikers love to score.

Even though Torres did not score I thought he was fantastic throughout and the Newcastle defenders were absolutely terrified of him.

He looked threatening every time he got on the ball and even though he missed quite a few chances he made half of them for himself and that shows just how good he is.

Only a couple of weeks ago Torres came off the bench to grab a decisive goal against Fulham at Anfield and that is what being a great striker is all about – getting goals when they matter most.

On Saturday, his team mates did the job but with Torres being as good as he is I’m sure it won’t be long before he’s scoring again.
