曾經參與設計北京奧運體育館〝鳥巢〞的艾未未，目前在北京的家中遭當局嚴密監控。日本《讀賣新聞》3月5號報導，艾未未在接受采訪時透露，他在奧運會進行期間就明白了，中共只是把體育館和奧運〝作為自我歌功頌德的舞臺〞。他發現，自己被政府用來散播愛國教育，因此醒悟過來，奧運之後，他沒看過鳥巢。艾未未在采訪中指控當局〝道德淪喪〞，已進入了〝絕望的階段〞。

艾未未告訴《讀賣新聞》：〝北京奧運是用最新科技和安全部門70萬名警衛，來壓制壹般大眾的生活，那只是為了壹黨向世界宣傳自身光榮的舞臺而已。〞

艾未未告訴《讀賣新聞》：〝獨裁體制最大的罪惡是泯滅人類的情感。〞他說：〝因為我童年經歷過各種苦難，而且有許多人支持我，所以能承受這種處境。然而，我懷疑壹般人能否維持正常心態。〞
伍凡指出，中共的所作所為使艾未未清醒了：無論妳為中共做了多少，只要它對妳不滿意，就要把妳至於死地。過去很多從國外回來想幫中共的知識份子，最後被打成右派、折磨死，就是例證。
艾未未壹直是中共當局認可的藝術家。但08年汶川大地震後，艾未未到災區現場，意識到〝豆腐渣〞建築物是奪去眾多孩子性命的罪魁禍首，他不顧當局強大的阻力開始調查，在地震壹周年的日子，他公布了5 385名地震中遇難孩子的名單。
去年4月初，國際上〝茉莉花革命〞興起的時候，艾未未在沒有司法訴訟的情況下，被秘密關押近3個月，在國際上引起震驚。艾未未表示，當妳試圖了解這個國家的時候，妳已經走上了犯罪的道路。
去年底，艾未未被當局罰交稅款1522萬元人民幣，短短幾天，有近2萬中國居民給他提供借款超過600萬元。

中共在國內竭力打壓艾未未，但他在國外名聲越來越響。
記錄片《艾未未：永不認錯》(Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry)，1月25號在美國猶他州〝聖丹斯電影節〞上舉行了首映，並於28號在〝世界記錄片〞競賽環節中贏得了評委特別獎。
艾未未的攝影與攝像展，本月底將在巴黎的網球場博物館開展。
《法國國際廣播電臺》表示，中國政府在艾未未事件上越來越進退兩難、不知所措。給他自由將對政權構成巨大的威脅，將他關起來，只會使他的支持者們日益增多。
