Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil, on the South Atlantic coast. Rio is famous for its breathtaking landscape, its laidback beach culture and well known for soccer, samba and carnival's. Rio de Janeiro is the place to visit if you're seeking a combination of beaches, sports, sun, exotic parks and gardens, and spectacular mountain views, along with dancing and drinking. Rio has a majestic beauty, as it's nestled between a glorious bay with dazzling beaches and a sharply rising mountain range covered by tropical vegetation. And the woman often called the most beautiful in the world.

Beaches such as Copacabana and Ipanema, the Christ The Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) statue, atop Corcovado mountain, and named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.The stadium of Maracanã one of the largest football stadium,and Sugar Loaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) with its cable cars,are all well-known sights of what the inhabitants call the "marvelous city" (cidade maravilhosa), and are also among the first images to pop up in travelers´ minds, along with the Carnaval celebration.# R q. q0 }3 T9 O& F

Places of Interest

Centro including Lapa and Santa Teresa. The city's financial and business centre also has many historic buildings from its early days. The most important ones are: The Municipal Theatre, The National Library, The National Museum of Fine Arts, The Tiradentes Palace, The Metropolitan Cathedral and The Pedro Ernesto Palace.
South Zone including Copacabana, Leblon and Ipanema, as well as the districts along Flamengo Beach. Contains some of the more upscale neighborhoods and many of the major tourist sites, such as the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, Sugar Loaf and Corcovado Mountains.
North Zone The Maracanã stadium, The Quinta da Boa Vista Park with the National Museum and the city's Zoo, The National Observatory and more.
West Zone a rapidly growing suburban area including primarily the districts of Jacarepaguá and Barra da Tijuca, popular for its beaches! Most of the Olympics in 2016 will be hosted there.

FAVELAS
A large percentage of the city's 13 million inhabitants live in areas of poor quality housing known as favelas, often crowded onto the hillsides where sturdy buildings are difficult to build, and accidents, mainly from heavy rainfall, are frequent. Favelas are often troubled by drug related crime and gang warfare.

Rio is also a city of stunning architecture, abundant museums, and marvelous food. The 2016 Summer Olympics will take place in Rio de Janeiro, which will mark the first time a South American city hosts the event.Rio's Maracanã Stadium will also host the final match for 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Carnival is Rio's main event. It happens at the peak of summer, when Cariocas are at their best. Festivities attract thousands of people from all corners of the world. Carnaval, as spelled in Portuguese, is a 4-day celebration. It starts on Saturday, and ends on Fat Tuesday, or Mardi-Gras. Carnival Sunday is seven weeks before Easter Sunday
