希望此文能夠抛轉引玉, 引起華人男性對自身的身份和文化傳統認同上更多的思考:

實際上，白人眼中的華人形象，(以下簡稱稱華人形象)並非獨立存在的，華人形象從種族，曆史和文化的角度看，都是從屬于整個亞裔形象問題的，且不同族裔形象相互作用,影響。北美亞裔形象綜合了中國人，日本人，越南人等不同族裔的形象。北美的華人形象具體而言，又綜合了中國大陸裔，香港裔，澳門裔，台灣裔，以及越南華裔，印尼華裔等具有不同特點，但屬同源的群體的形象。

此文依據的資料來源于STANFORD UNIVERSITY ，1982年對全美大學白人和亞裔女性爲主體的調查，以及公開發行的小說，電影及相關評論。詳見附錄.

白人社會的華人男性形象

“我打算找個白人，他個頭要高，要英俊，辦事利落果斷，自信而從容，能夠保護我，要有跋扈些(domineering) 但又要和藹可親，然後要有想象力….　這大概是想嫁給白人的東方女孩心目中的理想夫婿, 她們才瞧不上在眼中又矮又難看, 沒有自信, 做事笨手笨腳, 又傲慢無理的華人男子, 跟上他們會讓我們受苦的 ….”------- 這是70年代一位華裔女性的話.

來到北美大陸尋夢的華人, 想象著能在這塊土地上實現成功, 富裕, 享受平等的理想. 盡管有些華人已經象他們的白人競爭者一樣發達了起來, 但是總體而言, 華人仍然是被隔絕在白人圈之外的, 遭受受到宣傳,媒體的不斷排斥, 特別是華人男性深受其害. 他們的形象被大衆文化所歪曲, 他們的誠實正直品行, 健健康的體魄, 東方男人的特有魅力, 遭到偏見的貶低, 破壞, 甚至引起他們的自嘲自貶,直至導致內部沖突.

在1982年, 全美大學對在校的白人和亞裔女性進行了一次全國性的調查, 調查指出 “ 華裔男性被看作是軟弱的, 極端的, 缺少男子漢起氣質的, 只懂技術,而不同人情世故的.” (Nakano) . 然而另一類似的調查中,華裔女性在調查的結果中卻表現相當好. 爲什麽華人男性會得到如此負面有害的印象? 這種印象究竟來源于何方?　答案需要從曆史中和與東方人的國際沖突中找尋．　

華人男性形象的起源

19 世紀中葉, 第一批東方人, 其中主要是中國人,是被販賣到北美作苦工(華工), 去修ATLANTIC鐵路, 挖Californiad金礦的. “ 和黑人一樣, 華人在那時被當作奴役支使, 象豬狗一樣被白人買賣著, 毫無做人的尊嚴, 被看作野蠻的異教徒, 被看作如蛇般的陰險與狡詐的動物(Animal like).” (Takaki). 在這個所謂的”新世界”裏, 華人不是作爲交易品被買賣, 就是當作奴隸做著苦役. 最初負面的華人男性形象就這樣出現在交易帳目裏, 漫畫中, 和社會傳聞. (Harper's Magazine, 1864)

由于早期的華工是男性, 他們構成了社會的最底層, 白種人也就自覺地將華人男性視爲低下而不值一提的賤民,. 這種潛意識的主人和奴隸的關系模式, 導致了白人虐待, 歧視和恥于了解華人的傳統.

20 世紀初, 隨著美國在亞洲的勢力擴張, 和EXCLUSION ART出台, 其禁止亞洲移民進入美國. 這些事實助長了業已存在的精神上對華人的優越感, 一些白種美國人更頑固地認爲野蠻國度的後裔們需要他們的教導. (Takaki). 對華人乃至亞裔而言, 戰爭時期的宣傳更加劇了對待他們的虐行和歧視. 在二戰期間, “黃禍論”(Yellow Peril)塵囂一時, 似乎所有美國人都視亞裔爲敵人. 宣傳機器給仇視情緒火上澆油, 亞裔男性包括華人刻畫成邪惡, 潛伏著的危險的惡魔, 隨時會搶走白人的女人. (Takaki)

隨著太平洋戰爭爆發, 日裔美國人更是被美軍方投入隔離集中營, 因爲白種美國人沒有從臉和膚色上區分開日本人和日裔美國人的不同, 盡管許多亞裔包括日裔, 華裔以生命爲代價投入了保衛美國的戰爭. 日裔, 華裔連同其他亞裔一起在稱謂上被貶爲: "Japs, Nips, Gooks, and Chinks" (Takaki)

具有諷刺意味的是, 戰後的北美社會並沒有接受亞裔男性，然而亞裔女性在白人社會裏卻被接受了. 許多白人戰後帶回了他們的日本,中國新娘, 這在客觀上增加了亞裔女性的接受程度. “ 原因是白人英雄們能在戰場上殺了他們的男人, 而把女人們帶回來, 這樣挺好. “ (Steven Han) . 換而言之, 戰爭作爲男性間的殺戮, 女人實際上已淪爲戰爭的附屬品和戰利品. 沒有侵略性的女人, 可以作爲富饒人口的戰利品, 讓戰勝國受惠莫淺.

直至今日, 華人女性與白人通婚的比例相對華人男性與白人通婚比例, 前者遠遠超出了後者。這個不成比例的數字暗喻的是---華人男性的無能, 也造成了華人男性沒有男子魅力的形象. (Espiritu)

自美國1965年移民法頒布後, 華人移民再次出現在北美, 並以前所未有的比率增長. 隨著移民潮, 反華和诋毀的形象也是暗流洶湧. 新的華人男性形象隨著亞洲經濟的蓬勃興起, 加入了新的因子, 刻苦耐勞, 喜靜勿躁, 勤勉用功逐漸替代了野蠻的異教徒的早期形象. 然而新的男性形象沒能完全擺脫以前負面的, 被诋毀的形象的影響. 更況且不是所有的華人都以刻苦和喜靜爲特點的, 那些具有獨特個性的華人男性則被看作是” 不正常, 難以教化.” (Lam).

媒體對華人男性形象的塑造

華人男性儒雅喜靜的形象，因公認的精于技術, 和數學上的天分而稍稍添入了些魅力和令人贊賞的成份. 然而大衆媒體刻畫出的華人男性形象卻爲” 討厭的怪胎(nerd)”. 這在"Sixteen Candles"，和在全美流行一時的電視連續劇"Head of the Class"裏可見一斑, 這些媒體的作用在對華人男性的正面形象塑造上毫無裨益.

媒體尤其是報紙, 電視, HOLLYWOOD的娛樂産品是散布杜撰華人男性形象偏見的主要源頭, 通過它們, 被曆史的偏見和歧視性宣傳扭曲的華人男性形象, 送進了北美的每個家庭. 媒體技術的革命似乎更加劇了損害華人男性形象的趨勢. Hollywood杜撰的華人男性模式是擅長空手道的打鬥專家；大智若愚的老者；數學怪胎；貪婪狡詐的奸商；不近人情, 冷酷而濫刑的族長；唯唯諾諾, 娘娘腔的男人。體現在每一部涉及華人的電影裏，典型的Hollywood文化公式是, 塑造從卑鄙狡詐, 貪婪邪惡的奸商,到擅長格鬥武術明星的華人形象，而在此之上, 一個令人喜愛的白人英雄總是在決鬥中戰勝了邪惡的黃面孔敵人, 贏得美麗的(黃種或白種)姑娘一片癡心. (如, Mortal Combat, Bloodsport, American Ninja, etc..) .

此同時, 唯唯諾諾,娘娘式的華人男性形象也在媒體中頻頻亮相, 如"Sixteen Candles"和"Good Morning Vietnam". 在"Sixteen Candles" 中華人男性描繪成一個猥瑣古怪的男孩, 不停地找女朋友, 最終因缺少男人魅力無功而返.

出現在"Good Morning Vietnam"中的亞裔男性, 幹脆不是孩子, 就是同性戀者. 而只有一個白人英雄在這樣的鋪墊中脫穎而出, 去救了黃皮膚的姑娘. 實際上更有不計其數的電影裏，華人男性的形象定位在幹著走私毒品和其他違法的勾當的黑幫分子. 這些華人男性的形象無一不是蘊涵著他們是不可信賴, 腐敗, 缺乏品格魅力, 失敗者的偏見. 本質上這是一種隱性的不公開的種族歧視, 然而卻公然堂皇地流行于大衆間, 潛意識地驅動著白人優越感, 和強行維制著黃種人內心深處自卑感.

但有d 時候, 要睇番當地人gei 出發點,
例如我呢邊, 有好多華人都係渣靚車, 食好, 著好
有d 鬼仔心有不今, 會做d 野出黎攪事

我個人覺得外國人除左體型以外, 又無話特別優勝
身為華人又無需自千卑, 尤其現今中國愈來愈強大

That's a STUPID response. Why is it ALWAYS the same excuse people make: "because Asians have money"? People had plenty of reasons not to like Asians (or Jews, or other races for that matter) even BEFORE they were known to be rich.

See that kind of reasoning alone just highlights another classic Chinese "virtue": 阿Q精神 - if someone doesn't like you, it must be something you have that is better than his/hers. Because it's always hard to admit you're deficient in a certain quality as others have perceived you, and also because you care so much about how people perceive you.

Why is it so important what others think about you?

Trust me, at this point in time (2011), the average white guy is NOT jealous of the average Asian. Yes, some Asians have money, but despite their economy woes, overall the Western outlook in life, quality of life, work/life balance are WAY above Asia (except for the handful of first world countries including Japan, S. Korea, Singapore, HK etc but overcrowding is a problem in all of them) - you don't see Western people sending their kids to school in Asia as much as you see Asians in schools and universities in the UK/US/Aust/Canada do you? And how many white people want to emigrate to Asia?

I'm not worshipping Westerners, just telling it like it is. What was China doing when the Europeans were busy shaping the world the way they wanted it a few centuries ago?

Yes, things are changing, but if Asians continue to obsess over "face" and how others think about them, they would always be followers and not leaders. Just focus on yourselves, losers. Then check again in another 20 years.

心有戚戚焉...
雖然現在已經是知識爆炸的時代...
但還是有很多潛在的文化歧視問題存在...
所謂的高層分子運用媒體來散播這種形象...
進而根深柢固在一般老百姓心中...片及全世界
隨著中國崛起,
或許字經濟上能夠超越美國...
但這種文化優越的潛在問題怎麼解決...
我想才是最核心的問題...

I feel like Asian males' status is rising quickly, there are a lot more Asian leading roles in Hollywood movies now, since Hollywood movie companies want to keep the high quality yet don't have enough capital, so they beg for Chinese movie companies' help. They help Hollywood for no reason, but ask Hollywood to use Asian actors and show their charm. Even <Iron Man 3>, expected to be a blockbuster, is inviting Andy Lau and is giving him a major role - as Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.) assistant.

John Cho as Harold in <Harold and Kumar> series
Jackie Chan as Mr. Han in <Karate Kid 2>-2013
Tiger Chen as leading role in Keanu Reeve's new movie <Man of Tai Chi>-2013

It depends! In North America, There are too many races. They are trying to be equal.
However that is still too many problems between them. But now it is much better. Because the raise of the internet and movies, the west guy can accept different races better and better. You can read the movies. The black guy become normal guests. Asia always have one or two showing in the movies. Most of West guys know Blues Lee , Jacky Chen .....
So they are changing their mind through the movies or HBO.
Chinese Cooking are very welcome between them. You can try this way if you can.

现在还能在美国找到二战前移民到美国的日本人，本身就了不起，当年二战的时候，美国一个响指就将美国国内当时七十多万的日本移民全面肉体消灭，那么作为在那时候，忍辱偷生的日本人，对着美国人还能说什么？软弱是必然的，
但是现在的亚洲男性，相对于盎克鲁撒克人来说，其实半斤八两，谁都不会对谁有刻意迎合的成分。这个才是问题所在
