Pakistan was always a hotbed of extremism. Ever since its independence in 1947, it had constant military conflicts in the neighborhood. Most prominent ones were the independent war of Bangladesh and bloody conflicts with India over Kashmir. Pakistan, in particular the ISI, collaborated with the Taliban at the beginning of the Afghan War to assassinate the potential leaders of Afghanistan. Kazai himself had a narrow escape.
