Pakistan was always a hotbed of extremism. Ever since its independence in 1947, it had constant military conflicts in the neighborhood. Most prominent ones were the independent war of Bangladesh and bloody conflicts with India over Kashmir. Pakistan, in particular the ISI, collaborated with the Taliban at the beginning of the Afghan War to assassinate the potential leaders of Afghanistan. Kazai himself had a narrow escape. Pakistan and India are vying for their influence in Afghanistan and it spilled over to a terrorist attack in Mumbai 2008, though strongly denied by Pakistan, associated closely to ISI. The ISI also supports many extremist groups harbouring in Kashmir. On the bright side, the leaked documents dispel any residual illusion that this war is still winnable.
