Villa’s stunning showing at EURO 2008, where he was top scorer with four goals as Spain claimed a long-overdue international crown, has seen him become perhaps the hottest property on the transfer market.

The 26-year-old is tipped to leave los Che after a disappointing season that saw them flirt with relegation, although new coach Unai Emery is desperate to keep him at the Mestalla.

Liverpool have always been mentioned among the lead candidates to capture Villa’s signature, given the impressive link the ex-Real Zaragoza hitman formed with Reds ace Fernando Torres in Austria and Switzerland.

And now Benitez has confirmed he is intent on raiding his old hunting ground to bring 'El Guaje' to Anfield, although he understands his former club might not be willinge sellers.

"We have Torres, Voronin, Kuyt, Babel and Steven Gerrard, who can play as a second striker," Benitez said. "But we will try to bring in another option.

"Villa we know all about. He is on our list. But maybe it will be difficult."

Villa's potential acquisition raises questions about what position Gerrard will play next season, as the Liverpool skipper had begun to form an impressive attacking partnership with Torres last term.

      红军主帅贝尼特斯昨日接受采访时也流露出希望将“托雷斯-比利亚”这对西班牙国家队黄金组合“移植”到利物浦俱乐部的愿望。

      “虽然我们在前场已经拥有了托雷斯、沃罗宁、库伊特、巴贝尔，而且队长杰拉德也可以担当二前锋的角色。不过我们还是准备在球市中寻找其他选择。比利亚是被大家所熟知的，他确实在我们的采购名单上，不过我值得竞购他会非常困难。”

      除了比利亚外，身为前瓦伦西亚俱乐部主帅的贝尼特斯对于他俱乐部的队友大卫.席尔瓦也充满了好感。
