FWD or RWD with winter tires are fine.  I had driven many rental cars with winter tires and never got stuck.  A crappy Chevrolet Impala rental can start and drive fine at -28 degree Celsius when I was in Cranbrook, BC in the past.  My coworker drives a Mustang with winter tires to skiing so AWD is not really necessary as long as the car is prepared for this type of weather.
