事實上，當馬航MH370客機失去聯絡後，多國即時在馬來西亞一帶海域作出搜索，隨著後來有證據顯示，飛機起飛後曾經掉頭，搜索範圍擴大到馬六甲海峽去，以至後來再轉移至印度洋。而背後提供有關搜索方向及證據的，就有英國空難調查處及國際海事衞星公司（Inmarsat），兩者透過「從未使用過的分析方法」，估算出飛機的飛行路線。
