事實上，當馬航MH370客機失去聯絡後，多國即時在馬來西亞一帶海域作出搜索，隨著後來有證據顯示，飛機起飛後曾經掉頭，搜索範圍擴大到馬六甲海峽去，以至後來再轉移至印度洋。而背後提供有關搜索方向及證據的，就有英國空難調查處及國際海事衞星公司（Inmarsat），兩者透過「從未使用過的分析方法」，估算出飛機的飛行路線。

所謂的「從未使用過的分析方法」，就是運用多普勒效應理論（Doppler Effect）。根據有關理論，當波源和觀察者之間互動時，波的頻率會出現改變，導致其波長頻率被壓縮或拉伸。簡單而言，就是觀察者與波源接近，波會被壓縮，波長變短，頻率會變高；但當兩者拉遠，波便會被拉長，頻率會降低。常見例子是響號的車輛由遠駛近時，人會感到響號出現高低音之變化。2 l! B) C8 E7 W! }

然而，今次卻是史無前例把有關理論應用到推算飛機航線上。
