A pictograph is a symbol representing a concept, object, activity, place or event by illustration. They were used by ancient peoples and are usually painted on cliffs, rock surfaces, and in caves. They are also sometimes referred to as "rock art". Pictographs have been discovered throughout all of Canada. They may even constitute Canada's oldest and most widespread artistic tradition. The pigment used for the paintings is red ochre, which is clay containing a high concentration of iron oxide. The agent that binds the pigment to the rock may have come from any number of animal by-products. The majority of the images were traced with the finger, and some could have been drawn with brushes made of animal fur or plant fibers.
