Day 53 of the torch’s progress began at the the Iffley Road track in Oxford, where legendary middle distance runner Sir Roger Bannister broke the magical four-minute mile barrier on a balmy evening on May 6, 1954.

The 83-year-old was joined by Lord Coe at the track - now renamed in his honour.
