Premier League - Keegan quits as Newcastle boss

Kevin Keegan has resigned as manager of Newcastle United after three days of talks with the board.

In a statement of resignation, Keegan cited ongoing problems regarding the club's transfer policy, which saw former Millwall and Leeds boss Dennis Wise put in charge of player procurement.
"I've been working desperately hard to find a way forward with directors but sadly that has not proved possible," Keegan said via the League Manager's Association.
"It is my opinion that a manager must have the right to manage, and that a club must not impose on any manager a player that he doesn't want.
"It remains my fervent wish to see Newcastle United do well in the future.
"I have been left with no choice other than to leave."
This summer, several players were brought in over Keegan's head, while promising winger James Milner was sold to Aston Villa.
It is understood that the sale of Milner - and the failure to replace him - was the final straw for Keegan.
Keegan was initially reported to have been sacked after a row following the expiry of the transfer deadline, but the club denied that was the case.
With Wise and technical co-ordinator Jeff Vetere in charge of football development, Newcastle signed Fabricio Coloccini, Jonas Gutierrez, Xisco, Ignacio Gonzalez, Sebastian Bassong and Danny Guthrie but sold Milner and released five other players.
Owner Mike Ashley took control of Newcastle in the summer of 2007 but sacked Sam Allardyce after less than half a season in charge and, in January 2008 he briefed Keegan to break into the top four.
But no transfers were sanctioned in that transfer window, and with money more of a problem than first thought, Keegan urged the fans and board to be realistic.
There was more activity in the summer window, but with Keegan apparently marginalised by Wise and Ashley, his eight-month tenure and third stint at St. James' Park is now over.
