While Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers isone of the greatest basketball players of his generation, one accoladethat continues to elude him is the Most Valuable Player Award. Bryanthas wowed the NBA with his unparalleled ability to score, but the MVPhonor has perpetually gone to players on more successful teams.

"Kobecertainly is recognized as one of the top players in the league andrightly so. He is a great player. But as a team we need to perform upto a competitive standard for him to be considered an MVP this year."

Although the Lakers have been a good team,they've finished just seventh in the Western Conference the past twoseasons. Some point fingers at Bryant, criticizing that his dominantscoring overshadows his teammates and fails to make them better.

This year has been different for the Lakers asBryant's individual production is down but the team is winning at ahigher clip. Most notable is the emergence of young center Andrew Bynum.

The irony is that Bryant was caught over thesummer in a surreptitiously shot amateur video maligning the Lakers fornot trading Bynum for New Jersey Nets star Jason Kidd. Frustrated withthe team's slow improvement, Bryant would publicly demand a trade.
