Anthony Le Tallec claims that his Liverpool career could have been a hit if he had not handed in a transfer request when Rafa Benitez took over at Anfield.
The young striker left France and Le Havre at the age of 18 but never imposed himself at Liverpool.
Gerard Houiller was impressed by the athletic striker and gave him the chance to start in The Premier League, but when his compatriot left The Reds, Le Tallec asked new boss Benitez to loan him, as he believed he would never play because a number of Spaniards would join the club.
The attacker is now on loan to Ligue 1 side Le Mans and reckons that he might have taken the wrong decision.
“10 big foreign clubs wanted me but I opted for Liverpool,” he told L’Equipe. “I signed a five-year contract with an option for a sixth and I am still under contract with them.
“The only thing I regret is speaking to Benitez when he arrived to tell him I wanted to be loaned.
“I thought he would bring plenty of Spanish players so I would never play again.
“That’s the biggest mistake I made. I knew afterwards he relied on me. I think I should have pushed.”
