The Taklamakan is a desert of Central Asia, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is known as the largest sandy desert in the world. It covers an area of 270,000 km² of the Tarim Basin, extending between roughly 78° to 88° E longitude and 37° to 40° N latitude.
It is crossed at its northern and at its southern edge by two branches of the Silk Road.8 c" f" I1 p" S; U7 L& N; {% X
"According to National Geographic, temperature is extremely variable on both a daily and a seasonal basis, changing by as much as 20 degrees Celsius (36 degrees Fahrenheit) from day to night and 30 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit) from summer to winter.
The Taklimakan is bounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas: to the North by the snow-covered Tian Shan Mountain range and to the South by the Kunlun Mountains."
