The Taklamakan is a desert of Central Asia, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is known as the largest sandy desert in the world. It covers an area of 270,000 km² of the Tarim Basin, extending between roughly 78° to 88° E longitude and 37° to 40° N latitude.
+ o2 k& A+ T- `" O$ b+ }# I; mIt is crossed at its northern and at its southern edge by two branches of the Silk Road.
8 _, b1 A( G; n1 q) N! T, A# m"According to National Geographic, temperature is extremely variable on both a daily and a seasonal basis, changing by as much as 20 degrees Celsius (36 degrees Fahrenheit) from day to night and 30 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit) from summer to winter.
