The Taklamakan is a desert of Central Asia, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is known as the largest sandy desert in the world. It covers an area of 270,000 km² of the Tarim Basin, extending between roughly 78° to 88° E longitude and 37° to 40° N latitude.
It is crossed at its northern and at its southern edge by two branches of the Silk Road.' ^5 g% X. e3 T* l1 Z' l l
"According to National Geographic, temperature is extremely variable on both a daily and a seasonal basis, changing by as much as 20 degrees Celsius (36 degrees Fahrenheit) from day to night and 30 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit) from summer to winter.: f! ?5 V+ a1 h8 ` @$ f
The Taklimakan is bounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas: to the North by the snow-covered Tian Shan Mountain range and to the South by the Kunlun Mountains."
