全球年殺3800萬條鯊魚

【明報專訊】香港是全球最大的魚翅集散地,但一碗碗令人垂涎的魚翅背後,究竟有多少鯊魚犧牲﹖有英、美科學家利用香港的魚翅貿易數據,推算全球每年平均宰殺3800萬條鯊魚,共重170萬噸,較聯合國糧食及農業組織統計的39萬噸高出3倍多,意味人類一直低估鯊魚面臨的威脅。研究又發現,於太平洋生活的青鯊被過量捕殺,若情持續,青鯊將無以為繼。8 n2 [' _% \1 Z+ B! d' C6 _

3 B8 y1 n5 P4 Z  ]& s- c3 m: r; S有關研究將於下月在國際科學期刊《Ecology Letters》發表,由美國夏威夷大學及英國帝國理工學院合作進行。研究人員蒐集香港於1999至2001年的11種魚翅進口數據後發現,香港進口魚翅的數量佔了全球約52%,每年平均進口4000至5000多噸魚翅。

世界自然(香港)基金會海洋保育主任朱炳盛表示,研究證實官方一直低估鯊魚的捕殺數量,對保育鯊魚有很大幫助。

香港魚翅行商會主席趙禎祥則表示,近年不少國家如澳洲和南美各國要求漁民捕捉整條鯊魚,業界已向原產地的漁民呼籲,不要捕捉體型細小的鯊魚,因細魚翅不值錢,同時可讓鯊魚長大繁殖。
Can't just point finfger at Hong Kong.  Shark fin soup is a popular delicacy in Asia as a whole.  In fact, just Bangkok itself is full of restaurants specialized in gourmet shark fin soup.  Not to mention Singapore and Malaysia.  It is also an expansive item in Japan.

Well, I don't have particular love for sharks.  In fact, they scare me most of the time when I wind surf and skin dive.  Fishmen hate their guts coz many of them killed by sharks annually.  In fact, the fishmen in the Bahamas hate them so badly, as a revenge , they stuff sea urchuns in their throats so they die slowly in pain and argony.

Not to get religeous here, but there a saying that becaue they prey on the other species, God punishes sharks by making them sleepless.  A shark must continues to swin in order to get oxygen in their system to survive.  5.39.217.76; ?( @) R: R' y5 x% N0 B7 \

However, every life has its rights to live and die in dignity.  In the past, when fishermen accidently caught a shark in their net they would clip their fins--alive--and then let them back in the water.  This practice had been going on for decades until some animal rights group brought it to the world's attention.  It's quite common in the past to see longliners in Guam, Samoa, Taheiti, Hawaii ports had shark fins being wind dry on their deck.

& q& z8 l  P7 s4 U3 etvb now,tvbnow,bttvbThere are laws now that for every set of shark fin found in their hull, they must also have the cacass in their freezer.  If not, they will get a ticket and the penalty is quite costly.  In the US is, I think, you can get a $25,000 fine.  But in general, the penalty is mitigated down to about $5,000, US dollars, i.e.tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb6 y/ l. Well, I guess it's fair that fishmen can continue to hunt shark as long as they keep everything in tact.  I'd definitely like to see the price of shark fin soup go down a bit.
