For those riding on the world's first convertible cable car, however, even that small crumb of security won't be available.

Opening in Switzerland, The Cabrio rises to a height of 1.2 miles above sea level as it climbs the Stanserhorn mountain near the city of Lucerne.

And carrying up to 60 passengers at any one time, the innovative cable car has room for up to half of them to brave the bracing mountain air and stand on the top deck.

Starting at Kalti, which is 711 metres above sea level, the Cabrio transports passengers to the summit station 1850 metres up.

The open-air platform, which has room for up to 30 passengers, will offer unrivaled panoramic views of the Alps8 _0 m# C" K* n9 s. u0 E- b; Q

The length of the new cable car is 2.3 kilometres - a journey the cable car will complete at an impressive speed of eight metres a second.

In total, the ride will take just over six minutes to ferry passengers up the Stanserhorn.% @% S2 w# N: s

And being unveiled on the very same day as the £44million Emirates Air Line cable car in London, the Swiss version looks set to upstage Boris Johnson's pet project./ H+ X* }. B2 K4 u5 @6 @ f' |

By contrast to the Cabrio, the Emirates Air Line cable car rises to a height of just 90m (300ft).

And instead of offering panoramic views of the Swiss Alps, the UK's version provides passengers with a 360 degree perspective of the River Thames and east London.! }/ Y1 p' E6 m) K7 F

Speaking at the launch of the cable car in London, the Mayor said: 'Get on this cable car immediately. It’s beautiful, worth every penny and a stunning piece of engineering.'tvb now,tvbnow,bttvb+ A# n7 T2 z+ f& p" T' P7 R

He added that the new system would provide a much-needed connection across the Thames and become 'a must-see destination in its own right'.

Despite the innovation behind the Swiss cable car, however, the Cabrio is not entirely a depature from the methods of old as the car also incorporates a more dated transportation system into the ride.

In order to reach the starting point of their journey on the open-top cable car, passengers must first take a trip on a funicular which entered service in 1893 and was one of the world's first mountain railways to be powered by electricity.
