Hoyte - Finishing near top is a definite aim
Reserve team captain Gavin Hoyte will once again join up with Arsène Wenger’s squad for tonight’s Carling Cup clash with Sheffield United.
The 17-year-old was an unused substitute in the Third-Round tie with Newcastle last month just weeks after returning from the Under-17 World Cup with England.
His international commitments meant the centre-back missed the opening three fixtures of the second-string campaign. However, since returning to the side only one goal has been conceded.
Always willing to learn, Gavin, younger brother of first-team squad member Justin, is aware how beneficial it is to play at the level he does.
“As a young player, it’s great to play for the Reserves,” said Hoyte. “We face a lot of older players who have a wealth of international and first-team experience. It helps me grow as a player to play against top players like that."
The defender believes that his added responsibility is something he must embrace if the team are to achieve the success that their undoubted ability merits.
“As a captain it’s my role to encourage the team in every way that I can,” said Hoyte. “I can look back on the experience with the Carling Cup and England and pass it on.
“I really think we can do well this season. Definitely finishing near the top of the table is an aim and maybe even go on to win it. Hopefully we can keep the team spirit and make sure we are scoring goals and keep it tight at the back.
“Winning the Youth Cup can also be a target for us, but we have to keep our heads and not get to over confident about it. We do have a very young team here.” |
