If we look into the recent history of Afghanistan, we begin to see the irony and hypocrisy of American role contributing to the 9/11 tragedy. Reagan, Donald Rumsfeld, Senior Bush and Dick Cheney all played pivotal roles to train the Mujahideen to fight the Soviet for the invasion of Afghanistan, also taught the fighters the opium trade in order to pay the military cost. After the withdrawal of the Soviet troops, US had no established policy to reconstruct the country. The Mujahideen either became drug lords or mercenaries, and Europe and US suffered accordingly. It is an open secret that Pakistan (which is a hotbed of extremism), especially the ISI, had close relation with the Taliban and al-Qaeda, and that explains why it is so difficult for US to hunt Bin Laden down. The current administration of Hamid Karzai, backed by the US, is shaky. The only reason for an seemingly united Afghanistan is money. US (CIA) paid the warlords heavily since the beginning of the war to support Karzai. The conflicts among warlord and tribes would undermine the stability in the future. One other point, Cheney and Rumsfeld look like warmongers, but let's not forget they were CEO of Halliburton before joining the George W Bush's government. Major wars would allow them to pocket millions of dollars. There is therefore a self-interest motive as well. |
