| Obama is actually caught between the political need to bring the soldiers home starting in July 2011 and the military need to ensure the survival of the Karzai's government. General McChystal is brought in by Gate, the Defence Secretary, to tackle the violence in Afghanistan and Pakistan with a change to the so-called "counterinsurgency" warfare. There was insufficient resources for the war in the beginning and problem is further exacerbated by the American war on Iraq. Without enough military personnel on the ground, it simply cannot have a secure environment for nation building. The people start disenchanted and there is sign of the resurgence of the Taliban. The war becomes more difficult and Obama should handle this incident carefully, so as not to undermine the morale of the soldiers. |
